PSI is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that harnesses the vitality of the private sector to address the health problems of low-income and vulnerable populations in more than 60 developing countries. With programs in malaria, reproductive health, child survival, HIV and tuberculosis, PSI promotes products, services and healthy behavior that enable low-income and vulnerable people to lead healthier lives. Products and services are sold at subsidized prices rather than given away in order to motivate commercial sector involvement.

http://www.psi.org/

Project: Golden West Humanitarian Foundation

After a war ends, vast areas of land may be suspected of being mined orcontaining dangerous UXO. The process of discriminating trulycontaminated areas from those simply suspected to be contaminated iscalled area reduction. The number of suspect areas far outstripsresources available to perform detailed clearance operations, makingeffective area reduction essential. Golden West is developinginnovative area reduction systems designed to effectively locatelandmines and munitions such as cluster bombs, mortars and grenades, using both off-the-shelf and developmental technologies.

The Golden West Humanitarian Foundation is a United States-based,non-profit charity dedicated to the development of innovative, appropriate technologies to overcome the operational limitationsencountered by the humanitarian mine action community. By bringing tobear their innovative programs and expertise, Golden West saves livesand greatly improves the operational efficacy of the organizationsworking to rid the planet of the deadly Explosive Remnants of War (ERW)that threaten millions world wide.

For Cambodians, injury or worse from the landmines and unexplodedordnance that riddle their country is an ever-present threat. Unusedmunitions in dangerous, unsecured stockpiles pose yet still moredangers, presenting opportunities for misuse and illegal transfer. Eachday in Kampong Chnang, Cambodia the Golden West Explosive HarvestingProgram team works to secure Cambodians a brighter, safer future bytransforming these dangerous stockpiles of munitions into the toolsdeminers need to clear the country's minefields. Each month Golden Westtransforms hundreds of pounds of deadly munitions into thousands ofdisposal charges essential to clearance operations. With each disposalcharge we create, one more deadly landmine or piece of unexplodedordnance is cleared in Cambodia.

Kampong Chnang, Cambodia. November 2008.

Project: Images of Angkor

Angkor is a region in Cambodia that served as the seat of power of the Khmer empire from the 9th to the 15th century. Spread over almost 200 square kilometres is a collection of temples that form one of the greatest collections of Hindu and Buddhist architecture in the world. The principal temple of Angkor, Angkor Wat, was built in the 12th century and is considered to be the largest single religious monument ever built.

Largely reclaimed by the surrounding jungle after it was abandoned in the 15th century, it wasn’t until the 19th century that archaeologists began to uncover many of Angkor’s magnificent temples, although some, like Angkor Wat, remained in use. Some temples to this day are still entwined with the giant trees that have grown to become part of their very structure.

Over the last decade, the volume of tourists visiting Angkor has increased exponentially. With a million visitors annually, the character of the site is changing. The centrepieces of Angkor – Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Angkor Thom – are crowded with tourists descending from buses from dawn until dusk, and the local town, Siem Reap, is being transformed and redeveloped by the economic energy the tourists bring. Yet despite this inundation, there remains an incomparable beauty and elegance in the temples of Angkor.

Project: NEED-Burma

The Network for Environment and Economic Development (www.need-burma.org) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that operates out of its head office in Chiang Mai, Thailand. NEED has been in operation since March of 2006. They are an inclusive network that is non-ethnic specific, with the mission: to work towards strengthening Burmese civil society so that all the people of Burma may benefit from the practice of endogenous and holistic development strategies, based on economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable ideas.

They attempt to achieve this goal by concentrating their efforts on the promotion of environmental conservation, sustainable agricultural, and economic development in Burma. To this end, They are building a strong network in Northern, Western and Eastern Burma, by acquiring knowledge as well as seeking the participation of grassroots communities in order to help promote the practice of sustainable agriculture and economic development.

Many of the Arakanese, Kachin, Lahu, Karen, Burman and Shan youth participants of NEED are actively working for life security, peace and development in their respective communities by sharing knowledge, educating local communities and collecting data. This is the first step of NEED’s holistic approach to sustainable development in Burma. In other words, NEED is an organization that not only utilizes grassroot traditional knowledge, but also pursues contemporary scientific knowledge. It is their belief that through an amalgamation of the two, there is the possibility for the creation of a sustainable development path.

By promoting the use of traditional knowledge for conservation, NEED is encouraging grassroots people to challenge the current agricultural and farming development path which is unsustainable and harmful to local biodiversity. They are implementing practical ways to challenge the actual system of development by educating, mobilizing, motivating and researching target problem areas with short-term and long-term plans. Recently, NEED has been researching and educating local Burmese people about the serious negative effects of chemical fertilizer use in Arakan state in western Burma as well as Kying Ton and Tachilek in the eastern part of Shan state.

Project: Luang Prabang Children's Cultural Centre

The Luang Prabang Children’s Cultural Centre (CCC) caters to children between the ages of six and 18 by providing non-formal education in a variety of arts and cultural subjects not covered in the regular school system. Throughout Laos, CCCs are one of few opportunities for children to engage in social activities beyond school or family life and help to deter them from the ever-increasing influences of drugs and alcohol.

The Luang Prabang branch, one of 17 CCCs located provincially throughout Laos, opened in January 1998. They provide activities such as traditional dance, music, singing, drawing and painting, storytelling, puppetry, reading, games and handicrafts, all free of charge.
Children attend the CCC after school, on weekends and during summer break holidays. Over 250 children are registered annually, supported by a team of skilled teachers, volunteers and leaders. Through participation in the various arts and cultural activities, they develop life skills that encourage healthy lifestyles, good stewardship and cultural preservation.

The Luang Prabang CCC performs regularly in rural villages throughout the province, where, through puppetry, dance and drama, the children convey important messages such as children’s rights, drug and alcohol abuse and health education. This awareness work is undertaken in partnership with the Department of Health, Luang Prabang Radio and UNICEF.

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is a British humanitarian organization dedicated to clearing the remnants of conflict, notably land mines and unexploded ordnance. MAG has worked in 35 countries around the world including Laos.

MAG funds seven clearance teams working in Laos, two of which are all-female. This all-female clearance team is based in Nong Het, Xiang Khouang Province.

Laos is the most heavily-bombed country per capita in the world. Between 1964 and 1973, the United States military dropped over 2 million tons of bombs in 581,000 sorties in the course of their 'Secret War' in Laos. The legacy of the bombing continues to wound and kill Laotian citizens, as an estimated 20-30% of all bombs failed to detonate when they were dropped. Although they have laid in the earth for as long as 40 years, many of these bombs remain lethal.
